November 5, 2016 is National Bison Day and we’re celebrating this American icon (and its impressive fur). Join us by sharing a shot of your best beard, be it real or fake.
“It would be a real misfortune to let the species go extinct,” President Theodore Roosevelt (mustache and all) wrote of bison in 1907. And with good reason. The animal has long held a central place in American history and culture, including a pivotal role in the lives of Native Americans.
Extinction seemed like a distinct possibility during Teddy’s time, though. While tens of millions of bison once roamed the Plains, the animal’s numbers dropped precipitously by the turn of the 20th century. Fewer than 1,100 were left. Luckily, bison survived thanks to the herculean efforts of a broad coalition of supporters.
A similarly wide array of fans is stepping up today, supporting bison as they cement their place on our current landscape. Join us in celebrating our largest land mammal for National Bison Day and support it in becoming America’s National Mammal.
Bison fur is thick—so thick, snow is said to simply rest on it rather than melting.
Do you favor a similarly coarse beard? Then “The President” or “The Old Fashioned” might be your best bet.
Once you’ve locked down your beard choice, wear it proud:
snap a picture and hashtag it (#BeardsForBison) to spread the word to fellow bison supporters.
The bison has unparalleled historical significance to the U.S. Ask your Members of Congress to solidify its place by cosponsoring the National Bison Legacy Act.
On or even before the day, spread the word online about #BeardsForBison and National Bison Day.

Once you’ve worn your beard, you may have a hankering to see the real thing.
It’s easier than you think: bison are now in all 50 U.S. states. In addition to zoos, a number of wild herds are accessible on federal land.
On November 5, 2016 you can get involved offline by taking part in one of the many National Bison Day events occurring around the country.
